I attended Washington University in St. Louis where I received my BS and MS in Electrical Engineering. While there I worked summers at Barnes Hospital and Central Institute for the Deaf.
After graduation I worked for Monsanto Corporation in St. Louis, in the Agricultural Production Company, Research Division doing instrumentation data collection and data analysis. I became intimately involved with computer hardware, systems and software.
Leaving Monsanto, I joined Affymax Research Institute in Palo Alto California to run their IT group. Affymax was a post-IPO startup developing the GeneChip. Affymetrix was a subsidiary that developed a product based upon the GeneChip.
I moved on to Applied Materials to participate in their implementation of SAP as their ERP system and after that was completed, I managed IT services for the Etch Division of Applied Materials.
Leaving Applied, I ran the Information Technology group for Actel Semiconductor, supporting both the chip design and software development groups. I installed an EMC Symetrix Storage Area Network to enable them to share data quickly and easily.
Next, I joined Caliper Technologies shortly after their IPO as Senior Director of Information Technology and supported their R&D and manufacturing efforts. I installed a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) to track chip manufacturing, improve quality and improve yield.
The former COO of Caliper, and several others, started Nanosys, and he asked my to join them as Director of Information Technology to prepare them for their IPO. At this time, Sarbanes Oxley required a lot of process creation prior to going public. We also implemented an Oracle ERP system to replace QuickBooks. However, the economic recession and longer than expected product development times required Nanosys to downsize. As the company shrank, there was less need for a Director of IT, and with very little new was being done in IT it became boring, so I left Nanosys.
Currently I am looking for a position where I can apply my experience gained in large companies and in startups to develop an efficient IT department that offers good customer service and advances the needs of the business.
A more detailed history is in "IT Career" under "about me".
